Warm-Up

Have you ever felt it wasn’t “fair” when someone else got the same reward for doing less work? What did that feel like?

Transition:Jesus tells a story that intentionally confronts our natural ideas of fairness and replaces them with Kingdom grace.

Context

Read Matthew 19:27–30 and Matthew 20:26–28.

Observations:

  • Peter asks, “What then will there be for us?” (19:27) — a contract mindset

  • Jesus reframes greatness as servanthood, not reward accumulation

  • The parable in Matthew 20 explains how the Kingdom actually works

Kingdom People Serve the Lord, Not a Contract

Read: Matthew 20:1–7

Supporting Scripture: Colossians 3:23–24

Key Truth: In the Kingdom, obedience comes before clarity, and trust comes before terms.

Which workers had the least information when they agreed to work?

What does it look like today to “serve first” without knowing the outcome?

How does Colossians 3:23 shift who we think we’re really working for?

Kingdom People Serve Without Comparison

Read: Matthew 20:8–14

Supporting Scripture: Leviticus 19:13

Key Truth: Comparison turns grace into resentment.

What specifically made the early workers angry?

Why does comparison so quickly drain joy from service?

How does Leviticus 19:13 help us see that God is not unjust, even when He is generous?

Kingdom People Serve Because God Is Gracious

Read: Matthew 20:15–16

Supporting Scripture: Ephesians 2:10

Key Truth: God’s grace is not diminished by being shared.

Why does Jesus end with, “The last will be first, and the first last”?

How does Ephesians 2:10 show that service is a gift, not a wage?

What changes when we see serving God as an invitation to work with Him, rather than a contract where we expect specific outcomes in return?

Where are we most tempted to think, ‘I’ve done enough—now what do I get?

Application & Prayer

Where might I be treating God like an employer instead of a gracious Father?

Who do I tend to compare myself to in my service or spiritual life?

What is one simple way I can serve this week purely out of gratitude?

Prayer Prompt:

“God, thank You for letting us serve in Your Kingdom. Help us serve You with joy, humility, and gratitude—not comparison or expectation.”
