Warmup

Have you ever had something happen in your life that seemed bad at the time, but later you realized God was using it to teach you something important?

Invite everyone to share briefly—even young kids can describe simple examples (e.g., getting in trouble, losing something, etc.).

Sermon Questions:

Read Genesis 42:1–6 (God uses circumstances)

Read Genesis 42:21–24 (God uses time and conviction)

Read Genesis 42:25–28 (God shows grace)

Read Romans 2:4 (“God’s kindness is intended to lead you to repentance”).

Summary:

In Genesis 42, Joseph’s brothers came to Egypt during famine—unaware they were facing the brother they once betrayed. God used this situation to prepare their hearts:

Discussion:

Why do you think God sometimes allows hard circumstances in our lives (share scriptures that support your answer)?

How do you feel when you realize you’ve done something wrong, even a long time ago? Share what God's Word says you should do.

Why is it important to remember God’s kindness when we think about repentance (Romans 2:4)?

Is there something in your life where God might be calling you to change direction?

Application Challenge:

This week, when something hard happens or you feel convicted about something you’ve done, pause and ask God: “Lord, are You using this to prepare my heart for repentance? Show me what You want me to see.” Encourage everyone to write it down or share with a trusted person.

Closing Prayer:

“Heavenly Father, thank You that You love us enough to prepare our hearts. Thank You for using circumstances, time, and grace to help us see where we need to change. Please give us humble hearts that respond quickly to You. Help us trust that Your kindness leads us to real freedom and joy. In Jesus’ name, Amen.”
